Ring packing is a common technique employed in processing plants, wastewater treatment amenities, refineries, and offshore drilling functionalities for segregating contaminants from gas and other liquids. It involves rings being dumped inside the separation columns increasing the surface region for liquid and vapor contact, enabling quick and efficient chemical separation. Opting for the best type of ring packing depends on usage and specific requirements. Two of the most popular categories of ring packing are Pall Rings and Raschig Rings embodied with unique features and specifications making them better suited for varied purposes.
Pall Rings
Pall Rings are a kind of tower packing having cylindrical shapes with a series of inward-facing tabs accentuating the surface area within the column, featuring open windows and internal crossbars for improving material flow. Its interior and exterior surfaces increase the ring’s capacity simultaneously reducing the space it uses inside the tower, ensuring effective liquid and gas distribution to improve efficiency.
Types of Pall Rings
- Plastic Pall Rings
typically made from polypropylene and other synthetic polymers, is resistant to corrosion entailing efficient separation, though they’re unable to withstand extremely high temperatures.
- Metal Pall Rings
provide enhanced endurance capacity in harsh weather conditions and is made up of stainless steel which are cost-effective and corrosion-resistant.
- Ceramic Pall Rings
known for their brittleness, provide outstanding organic solvent resistance and chemical stability.
Pall Rings Applications –
Having wide array of usages in multiple industries like pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, waste and wastewater, petrochemical and chemical processing, Pall Rings have the following applications:
- Carbon dioxide & sulfuric acid absorption
- Ammonia & hydrochloric acid stripping
- Decarbonization
- Stream stripping
- Drying & absorbing columns
- Applications employing corrosive acids
- Direct contact cooling
Raschig Rings
Raschig Rings are tubes having equal height and diameter with solid walls developed and formulated by Freiderich Raschig for replacing trays within distillation towers. This type of ring enhances the surface area within tower, enabling more efficient reactions between liquid and gases.
Types of Raschig Rings
- Ceramic Raschig Rings
offer excellent chemical stability and resistance to organic and inorganic acids, alkalis and salt, providing cost-effective solutions and good heat endurance.
- Metal Raschig Rings
is made up of carbon steel or stainless steel, but made with metal entails great stability and strength.
- Glass Raschig Rings
are used in some applications less commonly though, than ceramic and metal ones.
- Plastic Raschig Rings
have less endurance capacity than ceramic or metal ones, made up of polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene and other plastic polymers.
Raschig Ring Applications-
Having a bevy of usages in numerous industries like food processing, metallurgy, petrochemical and gas, and oxygen generation, Raschig Rings have the following applications:
- Food & gas processing
- Ethanol production
- Processing nuclear materials
- Mass transfer
- Heat transfer
- Chemical absorption & stripping
Pall Rings Versus Raschig Rings
Pall Rings & Raschig Rings have similar built, used in several of the same applications. Both types of rings are available in different materials and sizes for providing solutions to businesses catering to their specifications. Yet there’re significant differences between the two, and to get a fair understanding of selecting ring packing offering optimal performance in applications, the distinction between the two is essential.
Features –
The biggest difference between these two kinds of rings is that Pall Rings have windows or tabs punched in walls, whilst Raschig Rings have solid walls. Whereas liquid and gases come in contact along walls of Raschig Rings, Pall Ring’s tabs create drop points using more of internal surface area. Windows and tabs usages in Pall Rings signify higher separation capabilities and lower resistance than Raschig Rings. Moreover, Pall Rings have better liquid and gas distribution.
Applications –
Both rings are apt for varied processing applications in numerous industries like petrochemical, food & drink processing, companies using them in chemical absorption and stripping, mass transfer and applications using corrosive acids.
Despite these similarities, Pall Rings are used in broader spectrum of applications, whilst Raschig Rings are appropriate for usages not requiring greatest possible ring capacity or efficacy.
Besides, Pall Rings have increased surface area and efficiency than Raschig Rings and are well-suited for diverse applications like industrial processing applications specifically those requiring low-pressure drop under vacuum and high capacity.
So, it’s easily concluded that Pall Rings is better choice than Raschig Rings in companies, improving efficiency in absorption, separation, and cooling. From the pharmaceutical industry to waste, and wastewater treatment facilities, Pall Rings provide the capacity and efficiency that industries need.

Structured Packing for Mass Transfer and Separation
Facilities like processing plants, offshore drilling locations, and refineries perform chemical separation functions called mass transfer functions. In these functions, liquids like gasoline and water are purified to get rid of contaminants. This procedure takes fruition by pumping liquids into the scrubber column, where the liquid is segregated from pollutants and particulates.
